About the Artwork
People blame each other for the situation their country has reached. And when they demand to replace those who rule them, they are faced with military men who are executing orders without reason. People requesting freedom and basic human rights have become outlaws.

Dramatic Death
Acrylic on Canvas
2020

About the Artwork
Death will never be funny
Despite the familiarity of a person with his surroundings and events, it is part of defensive methods of life, but the death barrier remains something that the human spirit will not be familiar with and will not be a subject to be ridiculed.

About the Artwork
Yesterday our young men were miners looking for crumbs of bread among piles of coal and darkness ... Today, despite the coals that cover them, they glow to create the sun ... I am the revolution!

Harvest
Mixed Media
2019

About the Artwork
This artwork talks about the tragedies and events that Iraq has experienced for years. Its name is "harvest", an expression for the harvesting, i.e. killing, of lives in Iraq for long periods. There are different symbols that simulate this topic, such as pieces of cloth on which skulls were painted, and the real release of a site where the attack was carried out by the terror organization Islamic State (IS). It was painted on a military camouflage net to symbolize the fighting that has afflicted Iraq for a long time.

United Nations
Mural Artwork
2019

About the Artwork
The picture is a mural representing the demand of the United Nations to stop the use of live bullets and tear gas canisters by the police against the demonstrators in the protests of October 2019. This mural was painted after the number of victims had increased and the demonstrators began calling for the intervention of the United Nations.
All the murals were painted during the demonstrations, and while the artists were painting people around them died or were injured. This work was carried out by the “Butterfly Effect” team, a group of young Iraqis.

Aya Al Hakim
External Forces
Painting
2020

About the Artwork
This painting expresses the external forces affecting Iraq and how Iraq is almost torn apart due to the desire of each party to attract Iraq to its side.

About the Artist
Aya Al Hakim discovered her love for art when she was a child, she opened her eyes to the world as an artist. She has a family history with art and her familiy's support motivated her to go work as an artist. She studied interior design but her passion towards drawing never stopped, normally she would draw portraits but she started to draw political drawings since she started working as a program manager in Rewaq Baghdad Center for Public Policy.
"Iraq is the most corrupted yet the most beautiful country in the eyes of artists", she says. Her artwork shows how neighboring countries are trying to control the beauty of the country by cutting off water for example and interfering with the inner situation. With her art she is trying to show how Iraq is suffering from its neighbors.

Sinan Hussein
The Guernica of Al Tahrir
Mural Artwork
2019

About the Artwork
The concept of this mural is about the youth who were at the demonstrations; “they came to the protests with pure positive hearts to stand up for their country, families, future and what they believe in. The closer they get to achieve their demands their hearts turn to green fields full of life and joy. They were inspiring young men and women with hearts so tender yet full of courage.” This was Sinan Hussein’s observation in October 2019, “a life experience” he has witnessed with his own eyes while he was standing between Iraq’s young protesters in the heart of the demonstration.

About the Artist
Born in 1977 In Baghdad Iraq, his artistic legacy extends from the vision of the Mesopotamian ancestors, its vagueness civilization, its splendor history and horrifying present. The silence discourse, the gaze of his figures and the odd objects in his paintings are nothing but a live metaphor from the past. At the age of 14 Sinan practiced art by sketching portraits of friends and family. His artist and musician father recognized the talent and encouraged Sinan to continue his art journey.

After several years of self-studying and observing the classic, the modern and the contemporary artists, Sinan joined the Iraqi Academy of Fine Arts in Baghdad, took his talent to the next level and obtained a bachelor degree. Soon after graduation in 2004 he fled Baghdad because of the war, and the vicious sectarian violence that almost ended his life three times before he decided to leave his home and family for good, and to find refuge in Kuwait and eventually in the United States. The nostalgia and the search for a new home have enriched and shaped Sinan’s paintings. Since early 2004 he participated and exhibited in many important art shows in the Middle East, Europe and the United States. His artwork is collected by Middle Eastern and Arab Gulf royalty, governments and private collectors around the world.

Sinan Hussein’s graffito was photographed by Hatif Farhan.

About The Expo

Iraqi Lines between Hope and Conflict

Iraq is well known for its diversity, its variety of regions, religions and opinions; all of which are in conflict and symbiosis at the same time down to the present day. This exhibition highlights the invisible “lines” cutting through Iraq’s social fabric by showing the work of Iraqi artists who use art to illustrate the manifold challenges as well as the hope of a people.
The exhibition space consists of two parts: one for “Conflict” and another for “Revolution”.
The “Conflict” section features art pieces showing the 2003 war, and informs about the challenges that the people and country are going through whereas the “Revolution” section exhibits artworks reflecting on the demonstrations since 2019, and the new hope the civil unrest has given to many Iraqis.

Sura Moyaed Brahimi
Women's Freedom
Sewing Artwork
2017

About the Artwork
The story behind the Artworks series as per the artist: "My mother used to sew on a daily basis, and I used to collect scraps of excess fabric. They are marginal pieces, small pieces I saved from the garbage, this is the case for girls in my community, we are pieces that are like pieces of cloth! My mother always wanted to teach me to sew, but we were different in our view of the material of fabric, when she was making dresses for a wedding, I was dealing with the issue of the causes of these weddings. Perhaps we are the remains or remnants of a certain group of human beings who confiscated our freedoms and our will, and even the worn clothes that I used in some of my works are but another confirmation of what we suffer from here where I live. Old clothes also occupied a place in the garbage before I used them to produce a part of this distortion. The deformation extends to include governments and countries, resulting in a chair made of remnants of fabric, missing one of its limbs in an unbalanced manner. Class, sectarianism, religious, social and political differences etc. are a form of deformity. Governments mutilate the men who have mutilated us in advance, and so on ... Today, my works reflect my distorted childhood. The works are nothing but a true picture of a harmful childhood that produced distorted dolls (rape, harassment, underage marriage, forced marriage, marginalization, confiscation of women’s freedom, subjugation, etc.) terms that some see as violent and painful, and some may live with them and swallow them forcibly, as happens here where I sit. All these distorted practices are enough to produce works in this way. Perhaps my work today did not overcome any of this distortion, but it will do later. The task is difficult because I am defending the freedom of women who themselves do not believe in their freedoms. Not today, perhaps tomorrow, I will reform the minds of women so that they believe in their freedom and become strong and influential women capable of deciding their own destiny".

About the Artwork
The really sad truth in this piece is that the human rights organizations are unable to carry out their humanitarian tasks as terrorist groups prevent them from doing their job.

Tabarek Al Atrakchi
Makrud
Watercolor and ink on paper (Collage of 4 Artworks)
2021

About the Artwork
Makrud is a character developed by Tabarek Al Atrakji. The word describes the unlucky and the forgotten. The Arabic plural of "Makrud" is "Makarid". The “Makarid” are vulnerable to psychological and physical hurt from the events surrounding them. The red line symbolizes the trauma they have experienced. It hinders their progress, affects them and affects their interaction with each other. They are all malicious, unaware of the damage they have suffered, violent with each other and unconsciously contributing to the increase of this damage. The character is aware of his environment and feelings though.

Ali Al Dulaimi
Between War & Peace
Cartoon Drawing
2017

About the Artwork
This Artwork is twofold. The first part is a filthy, murderous hand that does not have a specific religion or sect, and it holds a silencer pistol to kill any educated thought that calls for peace and fights injustice and dictatorship, while the second part is a dove of peace, which represents the thoughts of the people in a society. "I did not attribute this topic to a specific time or special place, because it is present in all countries of the world", says Al Dulaimi.

Ammar Abd Rabbo
Intensive Bombing
Photography
2003

About the Artwork
Second night of intensive bombing of the Iraqi capital. American missiles and fighters mainly target the presidential complex located on the banks of the Tigris, on March 22, 2003.

About the Artist
Born in Damascus in 1966, Ammar Abd Rabbo lived in Libya and Lebanon prior to ultimately living in France since he was 12.
As one of the Arab world’s most important photographers, his work has been published in the world’s most widely circulated publications, from Time Magazine to Paris Match, Der Spiegel, Le Monde, and Asharq Al Awsat. His photos appeared on more than 60 magazine covers, and his virtual gallery on the photo-sharing website Flickr has had more than three million visitors.
From almost a thirty-year career, his portfolio amassed intimate portraits of head of states, war coverage in Iraq, Lebanon and Libya, world-renowned celebrities like the late ‘King of Pop’, Michael Jackson, as well as high society events such as the Cannes Film Festival and Paris Fashion Week.
Abd Rabbo’s first solo Art exhibition, ‘Coming Soon’ was held in Ayyam Gallery, Beirut in early 2012. More recently, many of his works addressed issues like censorship, body freedom, nudity, women empowerment, gay rights only to name few.
His work on Aleppo in wartime (2013-2014) was widely published and exhibited. Curated by world-known (and anonymous) graffiti artist Banksy, one of his photos was displayed at “Dismaland” theme park near Bristol, England, in August and September 2015. He has been named “Knight of Arts and Letters” in a ceremony in Paris in 2018.

2019

About the Artwork
The picture reflects the October demonstrations, which started on 1 October 2019, and turned into a sit-in for a whole year.
About 700 protesters died, while thousands were wounded and dozens went missing. Live bullets and tear gas canisters, which are used for military purposes, were used to suppress these demonstrations.
The picture shows the demonstrators arriving at the Republic Bridge in Baghdad, while the security barriers appear to prevent them from reaching the parliament and government headquarters.
These demonstrations represent the longest and most violent in the modern history of Iraq, which constituted an important turning point in the history of the protests, forcing the government to resign and urging the formation of a new government whose first mission is to bring the killers of the protesters to justice and to prepare for early elections.

Ammar Abd Rabbo
Cleaning Saddam
Photography
2003

About the Artwork
An employee cleans a huge portrait of Iraqi president Saddam Hussein outside a railway station in the capital Baghdad, on February 11, 2003.

Um Raed, a 43 years old housewife uses a kalashnikov on the main square behind a small fortification. As Baghdad waits for war or a possible US strike, on March 2, 2003.

No Peace Allowed
Cartoon Drawing
2017

About the Artwork
All the colors and policies of the world and their intellectual ideologies are basically carrying in their folds hatred and loathing for the language of peace with others
The idea is about a soldier wearing military combat clothes and a helmet to protect his head, with an undefined color symbol on it to include everyone, while aiming his weapon at the sky to kill any peace pigeon that want to land on the ground, while there is a traffic light preventing any landing of pigeons on the ground.

Global Terrorism
Cartoon Drawing
2017

About the Artwork
The image of global terrorism, which today controls all the facets of the world, is like a ghost that appears in every place and time, and has no specific features in the operations of carrying out its terrorist operations. High-quality global security conferences were held here and there, but terrorism has not ended yet.
The artist's idea that is reflected in this topic was about these very important conferences, and it vows to fight terrorism by procrastinating in the future, while terrorism itself is challenging that struggle forcefully without fear.

Osama Sadiq
Cuneiform Murals
Graffiti Cuneiform Murals Artworks (Collage)
2019

About the Artwork
These murals represent words in Arabic written artistically into shapes:
The “Love” mural was painted during the 2019 protests against the political system in Iraq, the artist tried as much as possible to choose a word that summarizes what he saw during the protests: happiness, courage, sacrifice, decent life, homeland, peaceful coexistence, revolution, peace.

The largest “peace” word in the world by nail art on the roof of the Al Sinak garage, measuring (44 meters x 22 meters): this painting is dedicated to the world, the Iraqi people demonstrating peacefully for their legitimate rights, they demanded peace, they want a decent life. The artwork had the word “peace” in red because of the repression, killing and blood that the demonstrators faced. This work was accomplished in seven continuous hours. "We faced pressures and very difficult conditions in terms of the climatic environment, and the tense situation between the demonstrators and the riot forces who weren’t very far from us", he says.

The work shall convey a beautiful picture of Iraq and the civilization of Mesopotamia to the world, it demonstrates that Iraqi art continues to spread by Iraqi hands. Written in cuneiform art it was painted on the wall of the Iraqi School in Kuala Lumpur, Malysia.

About the Artist
Osama Sadiq, born in 1995 in Baghdad, Iraq.
He holds a diploma from the Institute of Fine Arts in Baghdad, specializing in graphic design. He is also a graffiti artist who created cuneiform art, which is a mixture of the past and the present.
In an easier way, it is Arabic letters, but in a cuneiform type. Each letter has its own shape, and the structure of the letters can be associated freely such as a single word or a group of letters.
His cuneiform murals are found in most areas of Baghdad, and they are self-voluntary works
All paintings carry a purposeful message.
The purpose of this art is to revive the ancient cuneiform writing in a new, modern and different artistic way. His goal is to convey cuneiform art to the whole world, and to open the first cuneiform exhibition.
He also has a cuneiform mural in Malaysia that he painted on the wall of the Iraqi School in the capital Kuala Lumpur.

About the Artwork
This photo was taken in 2018, for the children of an Iraqi school in the old Mosul "Al Farouq", as it is the first year in which students return to school after being deprived of it for three years during the period of the Islamic State organization in Mosul. Despite the obvious effects of destruction on the area, the students' insistence to return to school was stronger, so they made their way through destroyed secondary roads in which there are war remnants and corpses.

About the Artwork
The drawing raises awareness for the topic of “uncontrolled weapons”, that is weapons outside state control, for instance, in the hands of militias or gangs - a widespread phenomena in Iraq. The weapon displayed in the drawing escapes from the “state”, symbolized by the tree. While the weapon runs away from the authority of the state it is threatening both the sovereign state and the lives of its people.

2017

About the Artwork
This photo was taken in mid-2017 in old Mosul in the “Bab Jadid” area. This family was one of the first to return to their home after the city was liberated. The mother stands in the middle of the destroyed house garden, having lost two of her children as a result of the recent war.
The first was with a mortar, which the terror organization Islamic State (IS) fired at the families; while her second daughter died as a result of starvation, when they were trapped for many days inside the house without food or water. The child was killed by starvation as a result of the siege imposed on them.

About the Artwork
The photo of Khan al-Kamruk, one of the old Mosul khans, was taken in 2018, and it shows the great destruction that afflicted the place as a result of the military operations in the area, as well as the destruction of a part of the historical Al Aghaat mosque, which constitutes one of the symbols of Islam in the city, where the terror organization Islamic State (IS) deliberately booby trapped the mosque to prevent the entry of Iraqi forces liberating the city.
